ou'll like this. It's a good story...but it's even better because it's true.
You already know I come from humble beginnings. Preacher's kid. Bookstore clerk. Gospel pianist. Struggling to pay the bills. Dodging bill collectors.
Life was tough back then while I was trying to get "the money thing" figured out....
But the story I want to tell you happened right after I'd had my first real breakthrough.
I still wasn't making a ton of money. Maybe $7,000 a month or so. Not quite six-figures.
But, for a guy who'd spent his life broke, I felt like a MILLIONAIRE.
That's not the cool part of the story...
My wife and I took our kids on our first "real" vacation. We went to a resort in Cancun called the "Moon Palace.
Great hotel. Clear blue water. White sand. Tropical weather. Incredible food. Local culture.
It was wonderful. Our room was on the golf-course. I don't golf but it was gorgeous.
The room even had a hot-tub built into the bedroom. We could barely keep the kids out of it!
And, after years of poverty, it was like being in heaven.
That's still not the cool part of the story...
One night, my wife and and I were coming back to our room from dinner and decided to take the "long route" to go along the beach.
As we were walking, I pointed to a building that faced the ocean.
"I'll bet those are nice rooms", I said.
She looked...and then she looked again. She stopped walking and studied the building for a moment
She said, "But, those aren't rooms. Look. That whole bottom floor is one single hotel suite. There are only two rooms in that entire building!"
I remember saying, "What?! That's insane. That's as much square footage as a house! It must cost THOUSANDS of dollars a night! Who stays in a hotel room like that?"
It was amazing!
That's STILL not the cool part of the story...
Fast forward a few years. I was working with a company who announced they were holding a conference in Cancun. It turned out, they were going to be at the Moon Palace, the same hotel we'd stayed.
They wanted me to speak and emcee the event. Naturally, when I told Jessica and the boys, they were STOKED that we were going back. So, I accepted the invite and their event planner arranged our travel, booking, etc. All we had to do was show up and then I'd be speaking for 4 of the 6 days.
When we got to the check-in desk, the concierge directed us to the golf-cart stand to ride to our hotel room.
Our kids were SO excited. They had their heart set on being back in the same hotel suite with the big, giant, built-in hot-tub. For the entire ride, they told Jessica's mom about their last trip. (Jessica's mom came with us as a nanny.)
When we walked into our hotel room, the concierge started showing us around.
Master bedroom.
Guest bedroom.
A giant living room.
An office.
15-foot ceilings.
A kitchen.
A butler's quarters (and our own butler for the duration of our stay...)
There was even a grand piano!
I was blown away by how luxurious it was. But, when I walked out on the patio to see the view, we weren't on the golf course. We were on the ocean.
And that's when it hit me....
Maybe you've already guessed.
Standing there on "our" patio...I realized...
...we were staying in the exact same Presidential suite that we had admired years earlier.
I don't mind telling you: as I stood there....just 50 feet from where my wife and I had walked one evening a couple years earlier...
...I got teary-eyed.
Why? Because all I could remember was standing on that sidewalk and asking:
"What kind of people stay in a hotel room like that?"
And the answer came as clear as day:
"Whoever chooses to."
And that's my message for you today...
